Well, it's January16, 2013. , halfway through the first month of the year. I am wondering who made resolutions, goals, or whatever you want to call it. Out of all the people who set goals to accomplish something in 2013, how many of you started off on a high, and now, just a little over two weeks into the new year have stopped working towards their goal already?
Just because you made a goal to do something in the new year, does not mean it has to be accomplished within the first few weeks. Lets say your resolution, or goal, if you will, is to lose weight. No. Lets use quitting smoking first. So you decide to quit smoking. You get up January first and that's it, no more cigarettes. By January third you are so crazy out of your mind with withdrawals, you grab a cigarette, and you start smoking again. Now you feel like a failure, a loser, incompetent, incapable and out of control.
So you grabbed a cigarette, and now you have to start over. What we forget is, we have twelve months to accomplish our goal. If you really want to set goals and work towards it. Do it, set goals. Give yourself a time limit. That's what resolutions are about. Setting a goal and giving yourself a time limit to accomplish it. If you don't successfully quit smoking until October, at least you still accomplished your goal. Some people need more time and help than others do.
My personal resolution is to lose weight. I am not going to lose it in the first month. I might even show a gain in the first month when you consider all the goodies and rich food I had over the Christmas holidays. (Yes. I did gain, it wasn't a might, it is an I did). Anyway, I can't be discouraged because of that. I need to be realistic.
So I set a reasonable weight loss, over a twelve month period, and work towards getting there. How will I do it? I will gradually change the way I look at food. I have already started to change the way I see food, and I appreciate the change already. I am looking forward to a greater transformation.
I may fall off the wagon, and it may be harder than I anticipate, but I have something to work towards. Don't give up on your goal, keep working towards it no matter what it is. If you need help, ask for it. Those who love you want to see you succeed, and will help you when and where they can. Even if it is just a phone call to say you need encouragement. As well, you extend yourself out to your friends and help them, and what you are struggling with will eventually become smaller.
